MARVEL: IN WHAT CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER SHOULD YOU WATCH ALL THE FILMS?
While the trailer for the next Marvel movie, Black Widow, has just been released, here is the order in which to watch the previous 22 Marvel movies to understand the whole story. Allow some time. End to end, it still represents 48 hours and 45 minutes of viewing.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST AVENGER (2011)
Marvel's "Phase 1" begins in the middle of World War II , when the young and skinny Steve Rogers - played by Chris Evans - volunteers to take part in scientific experiments. He then becomes a super soldier and, helped in particular by Bucky Barnes, confronts the Hydra organization. It ends up frozen in the ice, where it will remain "in hibernation" for several decades. CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019)
In the 1990s, Carol Danvers became aware of her gigantic powers, while Earth was the scene of a confrontation between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls. Before leaving for space, the one who has become Captain Marvel entrusts a pager to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) so that he can contact her in the event of an extreme emergency. Duration: 2h05.
IRON MAN (2008)
In an era that corresponds to ours, the arms magnate Tony Stark, camped by an impeccable Robert Downey Jr, is kidnapped and detained in Afghanistan. To escape, he builds combat armor, which he decides to perfect and use to do good. Duration: 2h06.
IRON MAN 2 (2010)
Now equipped with his famous red and gold armor, the billionaire playboy joins forces with Pepper Potts - played by Gwyneth Paltrow - and James "Rhodey" Rhodes (War Machine) to fight against the villain played by Mickey Rourke. Duration: 2h04.
THOR (2011)
Played by Chris Hemsworth, the god of thunder arrives in the Marvel universe almost at the same time as Iron Man 2 takes place . Punished by his father, Odin, he is sent back to Earth without his powers in order to learn humility. There he met Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman. Duration: 1h55.
THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)
Also alongside Iron Man 2 , Doctor Bruce Banner confronts his double green and overpowered. In this film, the Hulk is then played by Edward Norton. Mark Ruffalo will then take over the role. Duration: 2h15.
AVENGERS (2012)
Nick Fury, now director of the land defense organization SHIELD, wants to assemble a team of superheroes. He enlists Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Falcon's Eye (Jeremy Renner) and The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), who must learn to fight together while the planet is invaded by an army led by Loki, the brother of Thor.
The latter seeks to get hold of the Tesseract, a blue cube which we will learn later that it contains an Infinity Stone. Duration: 2h23.
IRON MAN 3 (2013)
Following this first Avengers , Marvel enters its "Phase 2".
Traumatized by the invasion of Earth, Tony Stark begins to manufacture Iron Man's armor in large quantities. Creations that are very useful to him when fighting Le Mandarin. Duration: 2h11.
THOR: THE WORLD OF DARKNESS (2013)
As Thor returns to his home world of Asgard, his girlfriend, Jane Foster, is kidnapped by the Dark Elves. These seek to seize the Ether, which is in reality a second Stone of Infinity. Finally, Thor, helped by Loki, manages to defeat them. Duration: 1h52.
CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014)
Steve Rogers has difficulty adapting to the modern world. Then, he realizes that SHIELD has been infiltrated by Hydra, who threatens to seize new powerful weapons. Allied with the Falcon and the Black Widow, Captain America finds himself confronted with an old acquaintance: Bucky Barnes, who has become the Winter Soldier. With a formidable bionic arm, he manages to flee at the end of the film. Duration: 2h16.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2013)
A new team of anti-heroes appears, during an adventure that takes place in space. "Commanded" by Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) who calls himself Star-Lord, Rocket Racoon, Groot, Drax and Gamora join forces to fight the dangerous Ronan. He wants to take a sphere, which actually contains the third Infinity Stone. Duration: 2h05.
AVENGERS: THE ERA OF ULTRON (2015)
While trying to build a new weapon, Tony Stark is developing a new enemy: Ultron artificial intelligence . Despite dissensions, the gang of superheroes re-forms to fight it. They notably get to know the Red Witch and Quicksilver. In the meantime, Ultron uses the fourth Infinity Stone to create the enigmatic Vision. Duration: 2h22.
ANT-MAN (2015)
A new hero is entitled to his own film: Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd. This former burglar is entrusted by Doctor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with a combination that allows him to change his size at will. Duration: 1h58.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016)
Marvel begins its "Phase 3".
The Avengers are tearing apart over the issue of political control of superheroes. Two camps are formed: Captain America, Bucky Barnes, the Red Witch, Falcon, Ant-Man and Hawk's Eye oppose Iron Man, War Machine, Vision, the Black Widow. These are reinforced by two characters who make their appearance: Spider-Man and Black Panther. Duration: 2h28.
BLACK WIDOW (2020)
The next Marvel movie, which will cover the story of the character portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, should happen just after Civil War . The first just released trailer of Black Widow allows us to discover that several characters from the (surprising) family of Natasha Romanoff will appear in the film. It is also rumored that Robert Downey Jr, aka Iron Man, could make a final appearance there. The film is expected in April-May 2020. Duration: unknown.
BLACK PANTHER (2018)
After Civil War where his father, the king of Wakanda, is killed, Black Panther returns to his country to occupy the throne. But T'Challa finds himself fighting against the mercenary Killmonger, played by an impressive Michael B. Jordan. Duration: 2h15.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (2017)
Peter Parker, camped by young Tom Holland, resumes his normal life in New York. While he wants to become a superhero after fighting alongside part of the Avengers, he is restrained by Tony Star, who however takes him under his wing. Duration: 2h13
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 (2017)
Peter Quill meets his father, Ego, and learns who he really is. In the ensuing battle, mercenary Yondu sacrifices himself to save the man he considers to be his adopted son. At the same time, Gamora reconciles with his sister, Nebula. At the end, the latter goes in search of their "adoptive father", Thanos, in order to kill him. Duration: 2h18.
DOCTOR STRANGE (2016)
Doctor Stephen Strange, played on screen by Benedict Cumberbatch , arrives in Marvel filmography. After a car accident, this talented surgeon partially loses the use of his hands. He then went to Tibet, with the Elder, and learned magic and mystical arts, which he then used to defeat Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) and the Dormammu entity. Duration: 1h55.
THOR: RAGNAROK (2017)
While he went into space in search of the Infinity Stone after Avengers: Ultron's era , Thor ends up imprisoned on the planet Sakaar, led by the Grand Master (Jeff Goldblum). There he finds the Hulk, whom he first confronts in a Dantesque fight in a gladiator's arena. Then, they flee together, helped by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), before returning to Asgard to face the evil sister of Thor, Hela (Cate Blanchett). Duration: 2h10.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018)
All superheroes join forces to fight Thanos. Despite their efforts, the titan manages to seize the five Infinity Stones and then holds immeasurable power. With a snap of his finger, he makes half the living beings in the universe disappear, including a large part of the heroes. In the credits, before succumbing, Nick Fury calls on Captain Marvel. Duration: 2h40.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (2018)
In addition to Infinity War , Scott Lang is now assisted by Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), who is equipped with the same type of costume. But, in the end credits, while Ant-Man is in the quantum dimension, the snap of Thanos' finger removes Hope van Dyne and Hank Pym, who were responsible for bringing it into our dimension. The superhero is therefore stuck in the infinitely small world. Duration: 2h05.
AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)
The survivors, largely made up of the original Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and the Black Widow), will have to defeat Thanos. They will be joined by Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hawk Eye and Valkyrie. Duration: 3h01.
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (JULY 3, 2019)
While the first was released in 2017, the second installment in the adventures of Peter Parker is the direct - and end - sequel to Avengers: Endgame. This film indeed closes “Phase 3” of Marvel and at the same time opens “Phase 4”. Several other productions are already in the pipeline for the future: La Veuve Noire , Les Éternels , Les Gardiens de la Galaxie Vol. 3 , Black Panther 2 , Doctor Strange 2 , Avengers 5 .
